What an "era" means and why it matters
Pokemon groups sets into eras — Sword & Shield, then Scarlet & Violet, now Mega Evolution, which began in September 2025. Each era runs for a couple of years and produces a series of sets, and the era determines broadly which cards are legal together in sanctioned competitive play.
For a collector, the era matters hardly at all: cards from any set go in a binder equally well. For anyone intending to play in an organized event, it matters a lot, because older sets rotate out of legality. If nobody in your house is entering tournaments — which is almost everybody — you can safely ignore this.
04
The 30th Celebration oddity
The 30th Celebration expansion is unusual: it skipped the booster box format entirely in favor of Elite Trainer Boxes and smaller collection products. That has two practical consequences. First, if you want that set sealed, the ETB is the primary way to buy it rather than one option among several. Second, anniversary sets tend to attract scalping, so expect marketplace listings well above the $50 retail price for a while.
05
Should you buy the newest set?
It makes no difference to the quality of what you open. Pull rates are set per expansion and no set is a better buy than another on odds. What the newest set gives you is availability at retail price and cards that other children will recognize; what an older set gives you is often a lower price and, occasionally, a card list people care about more — Scarlet & Violet 151 stayed desirable long after release because its set is the original Kanto Pokemon.
Our honest advice: buy whatever is on the shelf at retail price. Chasing a specific set is an enthusiast's decision, not a beginner's.
06
There is never a wrong time to start
Sets release every few months, there is always something current, and Pokemon reprints heavily — so nothing you are looking at is about to become unobtainable. The scarcity pressure people feel in this hobby is largely manufactured by resellers. If a set is scalped this month, wait; restocks are routine.
The three boxes below are the 2026 releases currently in general circulation. Any of them is a perfectly good purchase.
Disclosure — Pull & Binder earns a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It does not change which products we pick or what we say about them. How this site is funded.
How we score. Five things we can check without owning the product: cost per pack against the format average, what accessories are bundled, how well it suits a first-time buyer, how reliably it is in stock at retail price, and how well it works as a gift. Our scores, our rubric — published so you can disagree with it.

Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box
The Pokemon Company
The current anniversary Elite Trainer Box. It is the set the 30th Celebration expansion was built around, and because that expansion skipped the booster box format entirely, the ETB is the main way to buy it sealed.
Typical price: $50 MSRP. We do not print a number — check the current price on Amazon before you buy.

Specs
- Released 16 September 2026
- $50 manufacturer's suggested retail price
- Elite Trainer Box format: booster packs plus 65 card sleeves, dice, energy and a storage box
- 30th Celebration expansion
What is good
- The accessories alone — 65 sleeves, dice, a storage box — are worth real money to a new collector
- No booster box exists for this expansion, so the ETB is the primary sealed option
- Anniversary sets get reprinted less, so availability is worth watching
What is not
- You pay a premium per pack compared with a booster box of a mainline set
- Anniversary products attract scalpers, so over-retail listings are common
