01 — Best Elite Trainer Box

The best Pokemon Elite Trainer Box to buy

Every ETB contains roughly the same accessories, so the choice comes down to the set, the promo card and what is actually in stock at retail.

02

What is actually in an Elite Trainer Box

An ETB is a cardboard box containing booster packs plus the accessories a collector needs. Pack count varies by expansion — the Scarlet & Violet base ETB held 9, Evolving Skies held 8, and the Pokemon GO box held 10 — so check the box rather than assuming. What stays consistent across the line is 65 card sleeves, damage counter dice, a set of basic energy cards and a storage box with dividers.

Those 65 sleeves are the thing worth noticing. Sixty-five is one deck plus spares, and bought separately a comparable pack of sleeves is a real cost. Price an ETB as packs alone and it looks expensive; price it as packs plus sleeves plus dice plus a storage box and it is the best-value entry point Pokemon sells. That is the whole argument for buying one.

03

Why the set barely matters

Pull rates are fixed per expansion and every ETB of a set has the same odds, so there is no "better" ETB in the sense people usually mean. The differences that genuinely exist are: which expansion's cards you get, whether there is an ETB-exclusive promo card, and whether a booster box also exists for that set if you later want more packs. The 30th Celebration expansion is unusual in that it skipped the booster box format entirely, which makes its ETB the primary way to buy that set sealed.

04

How we scored these

We have not opened any of these boxes and make no claim to have. The scores apply a published rubric to stated contents, release dates and retail prices taken from manufacturer and retailer listings, all cited below. Where a pack count varies by set, we say so rather than averaging it into a number.

How we score. Five things we can check without owning the product: cost per pack against the format average, what accessories are bundled, how well it suits someone buying their first Pokemon product, how reliably it is in stock at retail price, and how well it works as a gift. Our scores, our rubric — published so you can disagree with it.

The Pokemon Company Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box
01 — Best overall ETB right now8.7 / 10

Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box

The Pokemon Company

The current anniversary Elite Trainer Box. It is the set the 30th Celebration expansion was built around, and because that expansion skipped the booster box format entirely, the ETB is the main way to buy it sealed.

Typical price: $50 MSRP. We do not print a number — check the current price on Amazon before you buy.

Specs

  • Released 16 September 2026
  • $50 manufacturer's suggested retail price
  • Elite Trainer Box format: booster packs plus 65 card sleeves, dice, energy and a storage box
  • 30th Celebration expansion

What is good

  • The accessories alone — 65 sleeves, dice, a storage box — are worth real money to a new collector
  • No booster box exists for this expansion, so the ETB is the primary sealed option
  • Anniversary sets get reprinted less, so availability is worth watching

What is not

  • You pay a premium per pack compared with a booster box of a mainline set
  • Anniversary products attract scalpers, so over-retail listings are common

03 — Best for the promo card8.5 / 10

Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution Perfect Order Elite Trainer Box

  • Includes an exclusive Tyrunt promo card
  • Elite Trainer Box format: packs, 65 sleeves, dice, energy, storage box
  • Perfect Order expansion

What is good

  • Mainline set, so singles are easy to find if you want a specific card
  • Older release, so it is easier to find at retail price than the newest box

The Pokemon Company Pokemon TCG: Scarlet & Violet 151 Elite Trainer Box
04 — Best for the original 1518.0 / 10

Pokemon TCG: Scarlet & Violet 151 Elite Trainer Box

The Pokemon Company

An older ETB that stayed relevant because its set is the original Kanto 151. Nine booster packs, 65 sleeves and 45 energy cards. Buy it for the cards in it, not because it is current.

Typical price: above original retail. We do not print a number — check the current price on Amazon before you buy.

Specs

  • 9 booster packs
  • 65 card sleeves
  • 45 energy cards
  • Scarlet & Violet 151 expansion (original Kanto Pokemon)

What is good

  • The set a parent who collected in the 1990s actually recognizes
  • Nine packs is on the generous end for an ETB
  • Shared appeal across generations, which matters for a family gift

What is not

  • Not a current set — prices moved above the original retail long ago
  • Older sets are not legal in every competitive format
  • Check the seller carefully; demand on this one invites resealed boxes

05

The one thing to watch when buying

Price. The manufacturer's suggested retail price on a current mainline ETB is $50, and anniversary or heavily demanded boxes routinely list well above that on marketplaces. There is rarely a good reason to pay it: Pokemon prints a lot of product, restocks are frequent, and a box that is scalped this week is often at retail the next. The exception is a genuinely retired set like 151, where the price above retail reflects actual scarcity rather than a temporary squeeze.

The second thing is the seal. A resealed ETB with packs swapped out is the main counterfeit risk in this format, and it is why buying from a major retailer rather than a marketplace is worth the small premium. What to check.

06

Questions people actually ask

How many packs are in an Elite Trainer Box?
Usually 9, but it varies by expansion — Evolving Skies held 8 and the Pokemon GO ETB held 10. The 65 card sleeves and the dice are the consistent part. Pack counts in detail.
Is an Elite Trainer Box worth it?
Yes for a first purchase, because of the accessories. Measured purely on cost per pack it is worse than a booster box; measured on everything you get, it is the best value entry point. ETB vs booster box.
How much does an Elite Trainer Box cost?
$50 is the manufacturer's suggested retail price for current mainline boxes, including the Chaos Rising and 30th Celebration releases. Retired sets trade above that.
What is the difference between an Elite Trainer Box and a Pokemon Center Elite Trainer Box?
The Pokemon Center version is sold through the official store and sometimes carries exclusive artwork or extra packs. The cards and the odds are otherwise the same. Side by side.
